Hunting Art Prize Deadline November 30

Fellow artists!  You don’t want to miss this opportunity.  Did you know that The Hunting Art Prize is open to any Texas artist 18+ and offers a $50,000 cash prize for one fortunate artist?  It is absolutely free to enter, so why not?  Last year there were about 1500 entries, and 109 artists were selected as finalists and invited to show their work in a gala in Houston.  Several of the finalists sold their work at the gala, while others were approached by galleries or made other connections with artists and art dealers.

Two Frisco artists have been recognized as finalists in recent years. Jim Van Kirk (2011) and Misty Oliver-Foster  (2012).  Perhaps this could be your year!  Details below.

The call for entries for the 33rd annual Hunting Art Prize in which participants vie for a $50,000 award has now been issued to artists throughout Texas. The competition, which is sponsored by the international oil services company Hunting PLC, is considered historically the most generous annual award in North America for painting and drawing.

Eligibility The competition is open to artists who are legal Texas residents and at least 18 years of age or older by August 1, 2012. Artwork submitted for consideration must be a single two-dimensional painting or drawing not exceeding 72 inches on any side (including frame, if any).

Sign Up & Submission Artists must sign up using the electronic form at www.huntingartprize.com and upload one digital file representing their selected artwork. The digital file must be in JPEG format, no less than 1MB, and no greater than 2MB in size.  Deadline All entries must be submitted no later than midnight on Friday, November 30, 2012.

Questions? Email info@huntingartprize.com. For further details on submission criteria, terms, and conditions, visit www.huntingartprize.com.

Brian J. Magnuson

Cowboys of the Grand Canyon

The Winter Series by  Brian J. Magnuson

Opening Night – Saturday, November 12th 7-10pm

Laura Moore Fine Art Studios in downtown McKinney, Texas, is pleased to present Brian J. Magnuson’s most recent work, “Cowboys of the Grand Canyon, The Winter Series.” This exhibition of black and white images beautifully captures the rugged Arizona cowboy working the mules down the steep canyon descent in the heart of winter during a snowstorm.

Magnuson again presents stunning classical hand printed darkroom images that take the viewer behind the scenes for a detailed look at the life of a Grand Canyon cowboy during the canyon’s wintery weather. The viewer will be given a front row seat of the dramatic views of the complexity of the canyon from the snow-covered rim to the warmer paths below.

Magnuson, of McKinney, Texas, has made many trips down the canyon over an eight-year span to document the cowboys. He has held many one-man shows across America as well as been included in several group showings. The time has come!

The time is here for the artseen studio tour 2011!

In less than 24 hours we’ll have our doors open for our guests, and there is definitely a buzz in the air!  We’ve got an incredible lineup of artists, galleries and art collections on our first-ever tour, and we are looking forward to lots of visits from locals and art-lovers in the DFW area.

Last week I got the chance to go by and see the private art collection of Rex and Betsy Lowe – they have an incredible collection of art from all over the world.  Several of the works in their collection are by internationally recognized artists, and the quality of work is exceptional.  Personally, I loved their large-scale painting of “Roughnecks” by Beth Pearson-Lund.  Being a Texas gal, it made me feel right at home.  They are offering tours of their collection for free, which is something you definitely don’t want to miss!  Just print out a map (or pick one up around town) before heading over to Starwood, as you’ll need it to get in at the gate.

Betsy’s parents, Tom and Gay Freeman, are featured artists on the tour, and they live right around the corner from the Lowes.  A former gallerist, Tom is a very talented painter, and Gay does mixed media and bookbinding.  They have a nice collection of their own art, as well as other artists you may know from the Dallas area.

One thing that is impressive about the tour is the diversity of the art and the artists involved.  We have photographers, jewelers, printmakers, painters,  and a lot of  “mixed media” artists (a term for using a lot of different materials in one work of art).  The artists’ styles are very different, and I think the more studios you visit, the more you’ll appreciate not only their talent, but their hard work and creativity.

We have several educators on the tour.  A. Eilene Carver is an associate professor of art at Collin College.  Jeb Matulich and Carolyn M. Nelson are art educators at Liberty and Heritage High Schools, respectively.  Brenda G. Thomas taught in Flower Mound for years, and now teaches art at Skyline High School in Dallas.  Beejae Hawkins recently retired from teaching art in Plano, and I was a high school art teacher for six years, in the Plano and Lewisville districts.   Part of the allure of a studio tour is the educational aspect, both for the artists and the guests.  You get to learn about how an artist works, where they work, what inspires them, and the artists get to teach you about their work.

We even have a couple of student artists on the tour — Robert Wedepohl and Kimberly Harris are art students at Collin College and the University of North Texas.  They’re also good friends and work together painting murals.  They were excited to join the tour, and will be at Skatebus Skateshop in downtown Frisco this weekend.

We are so proud to have two galleries on the tour.  Thegallery8680 is a new venue in Frisco that features work by established and emerging artists from the North Texas area.  Their newest show “Black and White” opens tonight, and will be open all weekend for visitors.   “Black and White” is a visually striking show, filled with paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and mixed media work.

The Art Gallery at Frisco Discovery Center is home to the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco’s Fall Member Show, “Beautiful.”  The VAGF members were encouraged to enter art work that showed what beauty is from their unique perspective.  The opening reception for “Beautiful” is also tonight, during a party hosted by Frisco Arts Association.  We’re expecting a large crowd, and there’s a lot to enjoy while you’re there.  The “Beautiful” show will be open during the tour as well.

Heritage Auctions is coming to Frisco tomorrow and will give free art assessments to anyone who has a “treasure” they have hidden away at home.  Come out and let them see what it’s worth.  They’ll be at the Frisco Discovery Center from 10:00am- 5:00pm on Saturday only.

Do you know about Texas legend Frank Reaugh?  He is an early Texas artist who has influenced generations of Texas artists, even some that you may know here in North Texas.  Marla Fields is working on a documentary about Reaugh, the “Pastel Poet of the Texas Plains,” and she will have a collection of his original sketches on loan on Saturday at her home.  This is a one-time opportunity to see his work right here in Frisco, so stop by and see what Marla has been working on.

So much to do, and a beautiful weekend to get it done in!  We hope you can take some time to enjoy the studio tour, get to know your local artists (you’ll be impressed), and see a ton of art right here in Frisco.  Who knew?  Well, it’s not a secret anymore!

Get a printable map HERE, and pick up one of our nice, custom-printed maps at any of the stops.  See you around town!
